Service Description

Understanding and Supporting Children with OCD Symptoms Practical training for professionals working with children, young people and families OCD symptoms in children and young people can be complex and are not always easy to recognise. Professionals may encounter obsessive thoughts, compulsive behaviours, reassurance-seeking or avoidance without immediately recognising these as potential signs of OCD. This practical, interactive training will support professionals to develop a greater understanding of OCD in children and young people, including how OCD can present, the relationship between intrusive thoughts, anxiety and compulsions, and the ways symptoms can impact a child’s emotional wellbeing, family life, school and relationships. We will explore how professionals can respond safely, sensitively and confidently, including helpful language and approaches when a child discloses intrusive thoughts or compulsive behaviours. The training will also consider how well-intentioned reassurance or adaptations can sometimes unintentionally maintain OCD cycles. The session will provide practical strategies and opportunities to consider real-life scenarios and professional responses, alongside guidance around recognising when a child may need further assessment or specialist intervention and how to appropriately support and signpost families. The training is suitable for professionals working across education, health, early help, family support, children's services and other settings where they may encounter children or young people experiencing OCD symptoms. Key areas covered: - Understanding OCD and how it can present in children and young people - Recognising obsessive thoughts, compulsions, avoidance and reassurance-seeking - Understanding the OCD cycle and the role of anxiety - Responding appropriately to children experiencing intrusive thoughts - Supporting children without unintentionally reinforcing OCD - Practical strategies for professionals and families - Recognising when additional or specialist support may be required - Supporting effective signposting and multi-agency working This training is educational and does not provide participants with training to diagnose or deliver specialist treatment for OCD.
